Most tired lawns do not need replacing. Bring the grass back rather than starting again, and keep the roots you already have.

Scarifying strips out the dead layer that is smothering the grass and holding water at the surface.
Compacted ground is opened up so roots can go deeper and the lawn copes better with dry spells.
Thin and patchy areas are reseeded with a mix chosen for the shade and traffic that area gets.
A sand and loam dressing evens out small hollows and improves the surface the new seed grows into.
Renovation is the reset. A seasonal treatment plan is what keeps the improvement in place.
The order matters. Seed sown onto thatch and compacted soil will not root, which is why the preparation comes first.
We look at what is actually wrong: moss, thatch, compaction, shade, drainage or simply the wrong grass for the use. The cause decides the work.
Thatch and moss are raked out mechanically. The lawn looks worse before it looks better, and there is a lot of material to clear.
Where the ground is compacted, hollow tining or spiking opens it up so water, air and roots can move again.
A grass seed suited to the light and traffic is sown into the gaps the scarifying has opened.
A sand and loam dressing is worked in to protect the seed, level minor hollows and improve the surface.
A starter feed goes on, then a treatment plan keeps the new grass ahead of the weeds and moss through the following season.
Renovation is cheaper and less disruptive, but it is not always the right call. This is how we decide at the assessment.
There is still reasonable grass cover under the moss and thatch, the levels are broadly right, and the problem is neglect rather than construction.
Expect visible improvement within weeks of the work in the growing season, and a lawn that looks genuinely different a full season on.
Grass cover is largely gone, the ground is badly uneven, drainage needs correcting, or the topsoil is too thin to support a lawn at all.
In those cases we will say so and quote for turfing and new lawns instead, rather than sell a renovation that will disappoint.
